What happens when memory, personal history, and abstraction come together? In Visual Duets: The Space Between, Fountain Street artist Monica DeSalvo explores these connections through layered mixed-media collages that invite viewers to look beyond the surface.
Drawing from her experiences caring for her late father as he navigated dementia, DeSalvo incorporates fragments of his engineering papers, handwritten notes, and other personal memorabilia into her work. Combined with monotype prints, photography, and found imagery, these materials become part of an evolving visual language that explores the space between presence and absence, memory and forgetting, and connection and loss.
DeSalvo describes her approach as an effort to reach the “soul” of a work—where its meaning extends beyond what we see. Each composition offers multiple points of entry, revealing unexpected relationships between images, materials, and personal histories.
