Patricia Crotty

Gestural Landscapes

Patricia Crotty’s paintings channel the rhythms and unpredictability of the natural world into vibrant gestural abstractions that explore movement, atmosphere, and emotional resonance. Drawing inspiration from landscape, water, sky, and shifting environmental conditions, her work balances spontaneity with structure—where fluid brushwork and layered color evoke both chaos and harmony.

Working intuitively from observational sketches and lived experience, Crotty transforms fleeting moments in nature into dynamic painterly environments that feel immersive, energetic, and deeply sensory.

About the Work

Crotty works primarily in oil on canvas, creating abstract compositions that emerge from direct observation of nature and evolve through an intuitive process of layering, revision, and improvisation. Her paintings often begin with sketches made outdoors, capturing transient impressions of water, light, atmosphere, and landscape that later become transformed in the studio into expansive abstract fields.

Influenced by the Impressionist sensitivity of Claude Monet and Henri Matisse, as well as the gestural energy of Abstract Expressionists including Willem de Kooning and Joan Mitchell, Crotty’s work merges observational starting points with expressive abstraction.

Her paintings frequently suggest reflective surfaces, shifting weather systems, or organic movement without settling into literal representation. Through layered brushwork, floating forms, and luminous color relationships, she creates compositions that evoke both the emotional and ecological complexity of the natural world.
