About the Work
Wise spent 20 years honing her distinctive technique with palette knives, drawn to the way the tool could create a broken-color effect through individual, visible passages of paint. Over the past seven years, she has returned primarily to brushes, translating that same sensibility through multiple, often layered brushstrokes—sometimes short, sometimes long. She occasionally incorporates palette-knife work and, in some paintings, works directly with her gloved fingers.
Light is always the starting point for Wise's process. Rather than treating it simply as a subject, she allows light to guide her color choices, composition, and response to what she is seeing. Reflections, atmospheric shifts, and changes in natural illumination can become the catalyst for a painting.
This approach allows Wise to move fluidly between observation and abstraction. Her paintings retain a connection to the places and subjects that inspire them while allowing color, gesture, and accumulated marks to create something more intuitive and expressive.
Biography
Marcia Wise is a Massachusetts-based contemporary oil painter and educator whose lifelong relationship with painting began in childhood. A native of Cape Cod, Wise studied Impressionist painting with Henry Hensche at the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown. She continued her studies at the Art Institute of Boston before traveling to Paris to study at L’École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, and later studied at Boston University. These experiences helped shape a practice grounded in observation, color, light, and experimentation.
Wise spent much of her career teaching art while maintaining an active studio practice and exhibiting her work. Today, she works full time as an artist from her studios and continues to teach through private instruction and painting workshops. Her work has been exhibited and collected nationally and internationally.
