CLEARING THE GLASS: ‘OCEAN IN A DROP’ BY CATE MCQUAID in SUBSTACK
Beginning November 30, 2023, Fountain Street Gallery will embark on an exploration of the context surrounding art, revealing the profound impact it has on the artistic process and the narratives it unveils. From the brushstrokes on a canvas to the layers of mixed media to the dimensionality of a sculpture, this exhibition aims to unravel the intricate web of influences and inspirations that have shaped the Core Members of Fountain Street as visual narrators.

...we are unconventional thinkers, ...we are visual storytellers,
...we are cultural archivists,
...we are mark makers.
Art has always been a mirror of society, reflecting the values, beliefs, and aspirations of its creators. It serves as a profound means of communication, capable of transcending barriers and uniting diverse voices. Given the space we exist in today — the pandemic receding behind us, election year looming ahead, and many shifts occurring at all levels of society — it seems imperative to examine the act of artmaking and its given context.
Curator Nilou Moochhala is a visual artist who investigates issues of cross-cultural change and transformation – the ‘in-between’ – by juxtaposing found objects, memorabilia, and use of language to create social and political narratives. Moochhala received her MFA from the Yale University School of Art and her BA from Mount Holyoke College. She has exhibited widely across galleries in the Northeast; in contrast her public art installations have involved wheat-paste murals, street typography, and community storytelling. Moochhala is a recipient of grants from the Mass Cultural Council, NEFA, and National Park Service. Her work has appeared in The Boston Globe, PBS, WBUR, and Artscope. She is a Core Member of Fountain Street.
Assistant Curator Joseph Fontinha was trained and educated as an oil painter, receiving his BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and MFA from Lesley University. Over the past decade, Fontinha’s work has evolved into a combination of video, installation, animation, and performance, all rooted in a studio practice informed by his background as a painter. Fontinha has taught visual art at the high school level for over twenty years and currently lives on the South Coast, MA, with a studio located in his home. Fontinha is a Core Member of Fountain Street.
