About the Work
Zaslow's photographs begin with the physical qualities of her subjects. Fish, eggs, mushrooms, vegetables, and other organic forms are carefully arranged and illuminated, allowing texture, surface, shape, and gesture to become as important as the objects themselves. Her compositions often elevate everyday materials into something unexpected and contemplative.
Her Food Cycles series considers food not simply as sustenance, but as part of larger cycles of nature, ritual, transformation, and life. Through dramatic lighting and deliberate arrangements, Zaslow gives familiar ingredients a sense of presence and dignity, creating still lifes that can feel simultaneously contemporary and timeless.
Photography is only one part of Zaslow's broader interdisciplinary practice, which also encompasses sculpture, assemblage, alternative photographic processes, artist books, and film. Biography
Francine Zaslow is a photographer and visual artist whose career spans fine-art and commercial photography. She was born into an artistic family and was deeply influenced by her mother, sculptor Jean Zaslow. She studied at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where her early exploration of printmaking, sculpture, dance, and photography shaped an interdisciplinary approach to image-making.
Zaslow apprenticed with a commercial photographer in Hartford, Connecticut, before establishing her own studio in Boston. For more than four decades, she has worked with national and international clients while developing an extensive personal practice. Her fine-art work has been exhibited nationally and published internationally, with recent exhibitions including Elements at Galatea Fine Art in Boston in 2024. Her work also extends into books and film, reflecting her ongoing interest in materiality, transformation, and visual storytelling.
