Catherine Picard-Gibbs

Light in Motion

Catherine Picard-Gibbs creates contemporary oil paintings that transform landscapes, urban environments, and everyday scenes through vibrant color and expressive brushwork. Her paintings capture moments of light, atmosphere, and movement, balancing recognizable places with an energetic, gestural approach to paint.

Inspired by the nuances and drama of her surroundings, Picard-Gibbs looks closely at ordinary moments—a ripple of wind across water, sunlight striking a building, trees shifting in a landscape—and finds the potential for something more evocative. Her heightened color and richly textured surfaces turn these observations into emotionally charged images that hover between representation and abstraction.

About the Work

Picard-Gibbs begins with close observation rather than a fixed subject. Natural and built environments become opportunities to notice changes in light, color, weather, movement, and atmosphere, with seemingly ordinary moments providing the starting point for her paintings. Her landscapes may suggest a specific place while remaining open to memory, mood, and interpretation.

Her oil paintings are built through bold brushwork and layers of richly textured color. She works not only with brushes but also with her gloved hands and fingers, building up and scratching into the surface to create marks and physical variation within the paint. More recently, she has explored oil on copper, using the reflective quality of the metal to introduce another dimension of light and luminosity.

Across landscapes, urban scenes, and interiors, Picard-Gibbs uses heightened color and expressive marks to communicate movement and emotion. Figures, trees, buildings, water, and light are simplified or intensified rather than rendered literally, allowing the paintings to occupy a space between observation and abstraction.
