Anne Sargent Walker creates contemporary semi-abstract paintings that explore the beauty, complexity, and fragility of the natural world. Birds, plants, trees, and landscapes emerge through layers of oil, acrylic, and collage, creating images that are both visually inviting and quietly charged with concerns about environmental change, habitat loss, and our relationship to the living world.
Her paintings often begin with recognizable elements of nature before those images are disrupted, fragmented, or allowed to dissolve into the surface. Peeling forms, drips, exposed layers, and shifts between representation and abstraction create a sense of both beauty and impermanence, encouraging viewers to look beyond the immediate image toward the larger connections between people, animals, and the environment.

About the Work
Walker uses the natural world as both subject and metaphor. Birds, trees, flowers, and other forms of life appear within landscapes that are recognizable enough to invite identification, yet fragmented or transformed enough to suggest something more complex. Her imagery considers the interconnectedness of living systems while acknowledging their vulnerability.
Layering is central to her process. Oil and acrylic paint may be combined with collage and other materials, while surfaces are scraped, peeled, dripped, or obscured to reveal what lies underneath. These disruptions give the paintings a physical sense of accumulation and erosion, mirroring the cycles of growth, change, and loss found in the natural world.
Walker is particularly interested in the boundaries that separate and connect things. Panels can be divided into distinct visual spaces, while walls, fences, water, roads, and other literal boundaries become compositional elements. By placing different fragments of landscape and experience alongside one another, she encourages viewers to look past separation and consider the possibility of a connected whole.
Biography
Anne Sargent Walker is an American contemporary artist who grew up in the Boston area and Vermont. She earned degrees from Connecticut College and Tufts University and has completed artist residencies in Ireland, Italy, and Vermont. Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout New England and is held in collections including Fidelity Corporation, Waterway Capital, and Twin Farms Resort. She has also received a Berkshire Taconic Foundation Artist’s Resource Trust grant.
Walker has presented solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, including exhibitions focused on landscape and the natural world. Her work has been reviewed in publications including Artscope Magazine and Cape Cod Arts.
