Growth and Disruption

Disruption can transform us. Jogged out of our usual paths, we reexamine what is around us and within us.  Taking time for inner stillness, we reflect on what we value. We try new ways of operating in the world and come to know ourselves anew.

In this collection are works that read as reflections – on struggles, interconnectedness, and the nature of change. There is hope in the vitality of what Denise Driscoll, Leslie Zelamsky, Anne Sargent Walker, Sara Fine Wilson, Katherine Borkowski-Byrne, and Melissa Shaak have created. Each artist has demonstrated the transformative promise of the human spirit.

The Curator

Sylvia Vander Sluis is a mixed-media artist who explores material’s expressive potential. She is also a caregiver. These two realities mesh in tactile sculptures that tell a story of resilience. “My work gives the personal a physical presence that has emotional power,” she states. “I like the idea of making what is most vulnerable in us strong and beautiful.”

Sylvia Vander Sluis earned an MFA from Western Michigan University and BFA from Syracuse University. She has always maintained an art practice. Her work has been shown in many New York and New England venues including Cambridge Art Association, Arts Worcester, Mosesian Center, and Galatea Fine Art. Vander Sluis works from her home studio in Lancaster, MA.
