July 27–August 27, 2023
SoWa First Friday Art Walk: August 4, 2023 | 5–8PM

“About Face,” an exhibition of work selected from our annual international call for art. This year’s jurors, Michelle May and Payal Thiffault, founders of the independent visual art and lifestyle magazine Juniper Rag, invited visual commentary on artistic, personal, and cultural identity, as well as the politics of authority, representation, inclusion and exclusion. Featured are 37 artists working across various media, whose interpretations evidence a deep and resolute story of the human condition. Following their rigorous review and selection process, the jurors characterized the power of the show by saying, “the multiplicity found in this exhibition is the face of the world that confronts us every day, emotional and vulnerable, telling a universal story of an experience that unites us.”

ABOUT THE JURORS

Michelle May and Payal Thiffault are visual artists and co-founders of Atelier ID Global, a Massachusetts-based design and marketing agency. In 2021, they founded Juniper Rag, a visual art and lifestyle magazine. Juniper Rag’s mission is to elevate visual artists and creative businesses and introduce them to new global markets. May and Thiffault’s shared values of creativity and community drive their work.

May attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and began her career at one of the country’s top fine stationery and luxury goods businesses. In marketing roles, she developed and managed company-wide growth strategies and the social media strategy. An active curator and event organizer in Worcester, MA, May showcases local artists and contributes to awareness of the culture of the city. May works mostly in abstract, inspired by travel, natural and coastal atmospheres and environments especially in states of growth or decay.

Thiffault graduated from Clark University with majors in Studio Art and Economics. She has always been drawn to both the creative and business sides of design. In her early career, at the same company, Thiffault was a design director. She developed and led product lines while also growing strategic partnerships with leading retail and fashion brands. In her personal work as an artist, Thiffault celebrates nature, personal growth, and emotions through watercolor and mixed media. She has shown her work in galleries in Boston, Newton, and Worcester, MA. In 2022, she co-curated exhibitions in Provincetown, Worcester, and Newton, MA.
